Low Alumina Ceramic Packing Balls: Properties and Application Guide
Low alumina ceramic packing balls are inert ceramic spheres manufactured from bauxite and kaolin through molding and high-temperature sintering. Their alumina (Al₂O₃) content typically ranges from 17% to 31%. Inert ceramic balls are classified into five grades based on Al₂O₃ content: common ceramic balls, low alumina balls, medium alumina balls, high alumina balls, and corundum balls. Low alumina balls occupy the second grade.
Low alumina ceramic packing balls exhibit the following core performance characteristics:
Chemical stability. Low alumina balls demonstrate good corrosion resistance to acids, alkalis, and various organic solvents. Acid resistance can reach 98% or higher, while alkali resistance is no less than 85%. In corrosive media environments commonly found in petrochemical and fertilizer production, their chemical properties remain stable.
Thermal stability. The maximum heat resistance temperature of low alumina balls reaches 1200°C, with a thermal shock resistance of no less than 300°C. They can withstand temperature fluctuations during production processes.
Mechanical strength. Low alumina balls possess high compressive strength. For φ13mm specification, the compressive strength is no less than 2300N per ball, enabling them to withstand static loads from catalyst beds and gas flow impact.
Water absorption. The water absorption rate of low alumina balls does not exceed 8%, providing sufficient density for most industrial environments.
Primary Applications
Catalyst Support and Covering
Low alumina ceramic packing balls serve as support and covering materials for catalysts in reactors. They buffer the impact of liquid and gas entering the reactor on the catalyst, protect the catalyst bed from being displaced, and improve gas-liquid distribution. Their functions include increasing gas or liquid distribution points and supporting and protecting active catalysts with relatively lower mechanical strength.
Tower Packing
In packed towers, low alumina ceramic balls are used as inert packing to increase gas-liquid contact area and promote uniform mass and heat transfer processes. Their applications cover packed towers in refining, petrochemical, fertilizer, methanol, coal chemical, natural gas chemical, metallurgy, environmental protection, and fine chemical industries.
Other Applications
Low alumina balls can also serve as grinding media, suitable for coarse or primary grinding processes where product purity requirements are moderate and cost control is a priority, such as grinding ceramic glaze, common pigments, cement, and quartz sand.
Selection Considerations
When selecting low alumina ceramic packing balls, a comprehensive assessment should be made based on the reactor's operating temperature, pressure, medium corrosiveness, and catalyst bed load. Under conditions where the temperature does not exceed 1200°C and corrosive medium concentration is moderate, low alumina balls can meet operational requirements. If operating temperatures are higher or medium corrosiveness is stronger, medium or high alumina balls should be considered. When ordering, information such as reactor dimensions, operating temperature, and required specifications should be provided to determine the appropriate filling quantity.
